I like the composition in this shot, but the effects of the clouds spoil it. It seems that there is a huge fire... The cloud contrast spoils the picture entirely. Also the low contrast on the ground just doesn't do the picture justice. Also the clouds appear to have been selected and manually changes and this sticks out. If you had added lighter shades and fixed that this picture would have been a bit better.

Congrats on the DD!

Things i liked:
-The tree in foreground
-The composition of the "earth" portion as a whole

Things i disliked:
-The air portion of the photo. The clouds, in my opinion, look quite over manipulated. The contrast looks too artificial for my liking (almost like a 1980s music video) and the graininess is rather unpleasant. I think that i would have liked this a lot more had the sky looked more natural.

No offence, but the amount of black really hurts my eyes, there's just too much of it , it detracts from the clouds which I believe were supposed to be the focal point of the image.

In overmanipulating the clouds, I sort of like the effect that they've gotten... like they were made of something handmade.

But the tree kills it.

WWWWWWWWWWOOOOOW, at first when i looked at this i thought it was like, an avalanche, but then i looked at the old version.....
this is seriously amazing, actually if you'd like, i would love it if you wanted to work on a picture that i took, it's in my gallery
it's called "Eye In The Sky"
it's basically all clouds, or well, you'll see when you see it, i hope you do
thanks bye

Well, it's a nice shot, but you over-manipulated it to extremes. The clouds are grainy and LOOK manipulated, they have that computerized tone separation thing going on, which is very unappealing. You perhaps should have only upped the saturation on the clouds, too, because all the detail in the darker elements is unrecognizable and makes the shot very unbalanced. The old one actuall looks pretty good. A bit of burning in the upper parts of the clouds is all that would be needed. It's not a bad image, but you did over-do the manipulations

yah i know what you mean... i am not satisfied with this picture and the fact that it got a DD just puts a sour taste in my mouth, when there are so many other pics that are WAY better... so keep on speaking your mind, it makes me feal better to know that not every one likes it (especially me)

thanks

Well... some of my photos kind of suck too, so I don't feel like I have ground to just bash someone else's work, it's not productive, anyway. It's part of my 'teacher' side, too: how to tell your student that photo isn't worth it without having them drop your class.... heh heh....

exactly, you don;t have to bash ppls work to give them critisim. I always belive in calling a spade a spade, but also give credit where they have done things right.. ppl always get touchy when you comment on their work though..

I'm sure this looked great IRL, but alas it hasn't transferred at all to the finished product. If I had to have handed in a photograph like this when I was a student I would have been told to go back and reprint from scratch.

The clouds are obviously the basis of the photograph, so why oh why are they so over manipulated? All these people have said, ooh love the clouds, but to me they are ruined by the super high contrast. If you were going for dramatic feeling to the clouds, spending some time on them and judiciously burning and dodging would have made them far more dramatic. Over all the picture has suffered greatly through this. I can see many pictures where there is a similar tonal range to this photograph. Anton Corbjns portrait of Francis Bacon springs to mind, but alas here it has failed as there is nothing really in the picture that holds ones attention. I would like to see this picture with better cropping (far too much open space in the foreground with no interest) and little less of the contrast tool in evidence..

You obivously have an eye for the dramatic, and it was good that you tried to do something different with a cloud shot, but try and keep it a little more simple and subtle in the future.

I'm sorry that I don;t have much positive to say about this photograph, but I'm sure you will produce stunning work in future if you take your time and be subtle about your image processing..

i absolutely agree 100% the thing is is that i dont think this pic deserves a DD at all.... all these people were saying "good job" but really in my mind i am really unsatisfied with it, and by you "telling me how it is" makes me feal better! so thanks and ill try better in the future =)

Thanks for replying.

I just feel that there is a movement at the moment on DA where people feel like they are compelled to fav DD's and the like just because they are DD's. It seemed like this was a work in progress from your comments on the work and I felt you may benefit from someone giving you some genuine commentry as opposed to fawning comments.

I think you have a pretty good eye, but it does need some training to get it spot on. If you continue to work on your work (hehe) then you can only go from strength to strength.

Congrats on getting a DD, I am still waiting for mine (a wait which will probably last forever...) I'm glad that you have an open mind about your work and are open to dialogue about it..

i just took a quik look at your gallery and i have to say that anyone of your landscapes would beat the crap out of mine!! that "gimme shelter" one is amazing...

i know what you mean about "the movement"... i mean my pic was probaly the worst DD ever! did you see that samurai one? that was incredible and took talent and deserved the DD ( and all the favs it got) anyway...

thanks for the support and i will continue to work on my work... and i have never had any formal photography training, i just started a few years ago and have recently been making big steps ( with this recent pic being a stepping stone) so, thanks =)

... actually, I like the old one better.
increased clarity here is nice,
but there's more of a sense of movement in the other one.
and the colours are better...

... the newest one is manipulated too much, too obviously.
the clouds are well done, but the trees and grass seem too out of place...

It seems that the basis of the photo is the cloud formation...

The horizon is shoddy at best. It fell victim to the increased saturation. The amount of black is unbearable. At times it appears that there is a fire in the background and it's burning oil. Thick black smoke clouds covering the horizon, marking the upper stratosphere with an imposed dark overtone. The upside is you have a nice foreground and a decent view of the clouds. Everything inbetween suffered.
