Moon in Mourning II by killersnowman Moon in Mourning II by killersnowman
so ive been seeing lots of shots of the moon lately (if you can even call them that.... they are more like bright blobs in the sky...), so i thought it was about time for me to do another moon shot. this one is one of my favourites for obvious reasons... most moon shots are just the moon, but this on has more depth of composition than that. it is the second of my moon in mourning series (if you can call it a series...). the first one called Moon in Mourning did some of the stuff that this one did, except at the time i was limited to a 200mm focal length cap. this second one was done with a 400mm lens.

Enjoy!!! =)

EDIT!
i added a border and thast all

That is so cool, I love how the moon's the only thing truly in focus, and how the clouds both connect and divide the picture...great composition!

Great work with this piece! I love the tones in this! You really captured the moon well, and the shape of the tree with the soft purple behind it really gives the piece a lot of depth!

i wish i could capture the moon, i'd be out there whenever the moon was. i've tried but it turns out to be just a big white circle which is very disappointing. the moon is much more beautiful than that. well done.

id love to help you. what kind of cam are you shooting with? cause if it has some sort of a manual mode you should be able to capture the moon. the moon is actually really bright and you should use a daytime exposure to capture it. i dont know the specifics cause its been too long since ive taken photos but something aroung iso100 f4 @ 1/500 should be close

i'll have to read up on what the camera can do. it's my roommates digital but she lets me play with it. otherwise i have my film camera which is just a Pentax Auto Focus which i'm sure i couldn't do anything like that with this camera now that i think of it. i forgot what kind of camera my roommate has, i just know it's really cool, lol. thank you for the tip. i will give that a try.

Wow, perfectly framed, the different colors and layering of the clouds looks wicked. The fence and tree look airbrushed, and the moon looks so crisp. Nice job!

Since I am a budding photographer and not very .. equipment savvy yet.. from what you've replied to others all you did was focus and zoom in on the moon and you were able to get that much detail but still have room for the tree ... ?

nice to see that someone is asking questions =)

i used the 400mm lens and at that focal length pictures start to be very compressed. if i had taken it with a wide angle like a 20mm lens then i would be able to get the tree just as big as it is in this picture but the moon would look very small, because i am so far away from it. but when i use the longer focal length it makes the to objects look as if they are on the same plane (kinda, sorta)...

hope i explained it good enough.

thanks!

Somewhat, lol. Thanks so much for replying. I really need to get my hands on a film camera and some lenses and learn this stuff first hand.

I love it! Everything is so clear and crisp =D. I really like how you kept some of the moon behind the clouds. I think it would have looked funnny if you showed the whole full moon ;-). I also have to agree with you, most moons are just some glowing ball with a hint of what it can be.. This is a full out close and personal ook =D. Not to mention, you have something else to look at too, most are just some clouds and some land.. This has clouds, land, trees, a hill =D. Amazing job :-)
